Wimbledon Set to Begin, Cavs Victorious in Omaha

This is the part of the year when I start to get sick of tennis. The French Open happened, and now, two weeks later, Wimbledon starts. And I have to soldier through it. Not many of my girls particularly like the grass courts, Daniela Hantuchova being the notable exception. Dani is one of nine NSEFTPC Angels in the tournament, which kicks off tomorrow.
Serbian tennis star and my future wife Jelena Jankovic, who at 15th is at her lowest seed in a while, faces tricky Spanish lefty Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the first round tomorrow. I'm throwing Jelena to the wolves this tournament-the girl can't play on grass. With fourth-round points to defend, expect that ranking to tumble a little more. Sigh...
As for girls I actually have expectations for, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki opens against another Spaniard, Arantja Parra Santonja, on Tuesday. Victoria Azarenka, seeded 4th, starts against Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova. Speaking of Slovakia, the aforementioned Hantuchova, who pulled out of her semifinal in Eastbourne last week, gets Russian qualifier Vitalia Diatchenko and could play Vika in the third round. The last seeded Angel, Agnieszka Radwanska, opens against Azarenka's compatriot Olga Govortsova. Sorana Cirstea, who's been playing a lot better tennis recently, gets a matchup against France's Pauline Parmentier. The Bondarenko sisters are back to full health (I hope), and Kateryna plays tomorrow against another French player, Alize Cornet, while Alona takes on 27th-seeded Australian Jarmila Gajdosova. Last but not least, Elena Vesnina will go tomorrow against Spain's Laura Pous Tio, who clipped Lena on the clay in Paris four weeks ago. I think we could see payback.
Here's tomorrow's schedule. I'll be up at 7 a.m. to catch all the action. Rafa Nadal opens on Centre Court. Tomorrow's going to be a hectic day, I can tell you that.

In College World Series action, Virginia, the #1 overall seed, defeated California in opening round play by a score of 4-1. The game was scoreless through six and a half innings until John Hicks' RBI single in the bottom of the 7th. Virginia plated two runs in the 7th and 8th, and Cal's lone run in the top of the 9th wasn't enough. Senior righty Tyler Wilson picked up the win for Virginia, which plays again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against South Carolina, a 5-4 winner over Texas A&M. The Cavaliers will send junior right-hander Will Roberts to the hill to face the Gamecocks, who are the defending national champions.
