Today, six NSEFTPC Angels were slated to play their first round matches today at Wimbledon. Because of the weather, however, you can break those six down into three categories, each consisting of two: Angels who completed their matches, Angels who were in the middle of their matches as the rains came, and Angels who didn't get on at all.
Sorana Cirstea and Elena Vesnina were first on their respective courts, and one of those girls won. And it wasn't Cirstea. All the progress she had been making came grinding to a halt in a 6-1, 6-3 loss to France's Pauline Parmentier. Damn. Fortunately, Vesnina finished soon after, knocking off Laura Pous Tio of Spain 6-4, 6-2. It's Lena's first Grand Slam victory this season and she meets second-seeded compatriot Vera Zvonareva in the next round.
In the second category, fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka had a 6-4, 3-2 lead over Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova when the rains came, and Kateryna Bondarenko had just come back to win the first set 7-5 against Alize Cornet of France. Both those matches will continue tomorrow.
Lastly, Serbian tennis star and my future wife Jelena Jankovic was washed out, as was Daniela Hantuchova. This could be a blessing in disguise for Dani, as it gives her an extra day to rest a sore abdominal that forced her to pull out of Eastbourne. For JJ, however, it could just be delaying the inevitable.
In men's action, there were no upsets, as Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Mardy Fish all advanced.
