Despite her near-continuous presence in the WTA top 10 the past couple years, Victoria Azarenka had yet to make a Grand Slam semifinal appearance in her career. She had been to four quarterfinals, but just couldn't seem to get over the hump.
No more. The only NSEFTPC Angel left at the All England Club thrashed Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-1 today in the quarterfinals to reach her maiden Grand Slam semifinal. Vika dropped the first game on Court 1 when the rains came, and the match was moved under the roof on Centre Court, where the Belarusian's relentless groundstrokes netted her five straight games. After a small stumble, Vika closed out the set and broke early in the second, never looking back from there. The 4th-seeded Azarenka, the highest player left in the women's draw, will play 8th-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova on Thursday morning (my birthday, for that matter) for a spot in the final.
Speaking of Azarenka and Kvitova, I have some exciting news regarding them for after Wimbledon. That's all I'm going to say on that subject.
Tomorrow, it's all about the men, as Roger Federer faces Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Rafael Nadal takes on American Mardy Fish, Novak Djokovic goes up against 18-year old Australian Bernard Tomic, and hometown favorite Andy Murray plays Feliciano Lopez.
